Greater London Authority have assigned Lorenzo Brusci/Sound and Experience Design and acoustician Gianluca Memoli (Imperial College, London, UK) to outline the guide lines of an urban Sonic Garden Design approach. We also will be focusing on 2 ‘case studies’ and their actual feasibility requirements.
The document will illustrate how specially designed ‘sonic emitters’ diffusing customized ‘music soundscapes’, integrated within revitalised garden landscape design, can modify users’ perceptions and enhance enjoyment in open spaces adversely affected by traffic and other urban noise. Appendices will be produced including costing and preliminary design/feasibility studies of 2 example schemes. The practical aim is to encourage architects and urban designers to reflect and include acoustic needs and opportunities in their designs.
Wider project objectives:
_ To raise awareness of the principles of psychoacoustic design among public realm managers, commissioners, planners and designers.
_ To encourage development of pilot projects demonstrating innovation in soundscape design.
_To raise the profile of positive soundscape design in urban public space design;
_ To promote innovative approaches by open space managers, commissioners, planners and designers.
_ To raise awareness of the expressive and social meaning of urban ‘music soundscapes’.
Our urban sonic garden design practice incorporates equalities strategies focusing on various types of impairment (i.e. visual impairment, forms of hearing difficulty).
The work will also reflect the background of potential wellbeing and sustainable development benefits from promoting more humane and supportive ‘music soundscapes’. The use of renewable energy / ‘green electricity’ is in our design agenda. Account will also be taken of climate change issues – e.g. our natural watering techniques and planting can substitute or integrate artificial watering.
