Interactive Plants. Madrid, Noche en blanco 2007. installation by Giardino Sonoro. Sound and experience design Lorenzo Brusci/GS; Digital plants concept and design: Sara Meloni, Giovanni Conti, Lorenzo Brusci, 2007.

Real and digital plants surround people inside the octagonal rondò of the Cuartel General del Exercito of Spain, september 2007.
The digital plants are sensitive to the human density and lasting presence in the centre of the space.
The installation audiovisual content is produced in real time by a custom designed interactive system, built with an object-oriented programming language that run on several computers, each one dedicated to a specific task.
Ranging sensors were installed under each screen to perceive the visitor’s distance from the digital plants, whose behaviour was designed to react to the values reported by the sensors, growing, flowering, dancing, exploding to respond to the level of symbolic intimacy that the visitor express through his movement.
The three digital plants are designed to look and behave like different beings: each one has a characteristic evolution cycle with a given range of steps that are triggered and regulated in occurrence and intensity by both human movement and sound analysis.
Media design, experience design and landscape design are combined to generate a wide environmental immersiveness, imparting an altered cognitive perspective on the habitat.
The soundscape is the result of a realtime metacomposition and audio processing system based on sensor reading: each plant has its own soundtrack, continuously altered by the movement of the visitors, that mix in a global tri-phonic composition.
All the data extracted by the sensors and sound analysis modules are distributed to the computer network via the O.S.C. protocol.
The responsiveness to presence and sound is affected also by the current evolutionary phase of the digital plants. Since the visual and acoustic result depends on so many different factors changing at the same time, infinites nuances are produced and a big number of combinations is possible.

Based on the choreographic understanding of the specifically designed symbolic phenomena, we allow the visitor to transfigure his relationship with the contents already inhabiting the garden site. Through a deep, immersive and dynamic meaning of ‘public space’ we want to suggest visitors to strongly request an extraordinary town for their everyday lives. An ephimeral installation can be a livable experiment for possible cities.
